Which Mushroom Coffee Is Right For You?
There’s a reason mushroom coffee has exploded in popularity lately. But with so many brands out there, things get confusing. Finding the right one comes down to one simple question - are you looking for one specific benefit, or do you want a bit of everything?
What Do You Actually Need?
This simplifies things massively.
Some mushroom coffees are pureblends. Meaning they focus on one functional mushroom (and therefore one main benefit).
Others are multiblends, where lots of different mushrooms are mixed together into one product.
Neither approach is automatically better. It depends what you’re actually trying to get from it.
Pureblends vs Multiblends
If your goal is just focus and mental clarity, a pureblend makes more sense. You’re getting more of the mushroom you actually care about, usually at a lower cost too.
But if you want support across multiple areas - energy, focus, immunity, relaxation and skin health - then a multiblend is a convenient option.
The trade-off?
Once brands start adding lots of mushrooms together, something usually has to give. So either:
- the amounts of each mushroom become smaller
- the quality of the extracts drops
- or the price increases significantly
That’s why it’s worth asking yourself what you actually want before buying.

Which Mushrooms Are Which?
Brands throw mushroom names around without explaining what they’re actually for. Here’s a quick rundown for you:
Lion’s Mane
Associated with focused energy, mental clarity and productivity. This is the most common choice for people replacing their morning coffee.
Chaga
Known for antioxidants and general wellness support. Often linked with immunity-related benefits.
Reishi
Traditionally used for relaxation and stress support. Commonly used in evening drinks and calming blends.
Cordyceps
Usually associated with physical performance. Popular with exercise-focused products.
Tremella
Often linked to skin hydration and beauty-focused products.
Turkey Tail
Most commonly discussed in relation to gut health and immune support.
Watch Out For Sneaky Additives
Here’s something many people don’t realise.
Mushroom Coffees can often contain additives, flavourings and processing ingredients.
Why? Two main reasons:
- Because combining lots of mushroom extracts together ends up tasting pretty bad and doesn’t dissolve into a smooth drink.
- Additives help mask low-quality ingredients that have a poor taste.
Many brands turn to synthetic flavourings or stabilisers to make their drinks smoother and more “coffee-like” while keeping their costs down.
Multiblends are usually the ones that need to do this although some pureblends (especially cheaper ones) do as well. Some brands do succeed with short ingredient lists and zero additives, so it is possible - you just have to shop around.
One thing to watch out for is the phrase “natural flavouring” on the label.
This is a loophole with labelling regulations that allows brands to group together multiple flavouring ingredients without fully explaining what they are individually.
That doesn’t automatically mean the product is bad. But it does make it harder to know exactly what you’re drinking.
Value For Money
If you mainly care about one benefit, pureblends are the better value for money because you’re paying directly for the mushroom you actually want.
During our research, we found that many multiblend brands present themselves well on the surface with lovely branding and lots of health claims.
But once you dig deeper, either:
- the mushroom extracts are fairly low-dose
- the extract quality is unclear
- or the monthly cost becomes surprisingly high
Another thing to keep a keen eye on is subscriptions.
Practically every mushroom coffee brand out there is pushing for you to subscribe, often with offers of “free gifts” and large first-order discounts.
A lot of those gifts have inflated retail prices to make the offer seem more generous than it really is (£10 for a spoon…come on!). Meanwhile, the ongoing monthly subscription cost is where they get you.
So by all means subscribe to get the offer, but just remember to cancel your subscription if you don't want more showing up on your doorstep!
Wrapping Up
The best mushroom coffee isn’t necessarily the one with the most mushrooms in it. It’s the one that actually matches what you want from it.
If you have one clear goal in mind, a focused pureblend gives better value and higher-strength ingredients.
If you genuinely want support across lots of different areas and like the convenience of an all-in-one product, a multiblend could be worth the extra money.
Either way, it’s always worth looking beyond the marketing and checking:
- what mushrooms are actually included
- how much of each you’re getting
- what additives are inside
- and what the real monthly cost looks like over time
